First club founded in Croatia was Zagreb Giants in November 2005 by Robert Gojević and Kolja Koračak.
In 2006 due to increased number of players, the club changes its name to Zagreb Hawks establishing its link with Hawthorn Hawks (AFL). On June 10th 2006 Hawks participated in Vienna on their first international tournament with Austria and Czech Republic. During 2006 and 2007 Zagreb Hawks won the so called Tri-nations league playing tournaments in Zagreb, Prague and Vienna.
The Croatian national team was founded and it took its place on CEAFL cup where it lost in the finals against Finland. CEAFL league also took place and the Knights won the title against Austria and Czech Republic.
In the year 2008 the second club was formed, Kaptol Saints who won the Croatian league that year. Croatian national team (Croatian Knights) won the silver medal in Euro Cup in Prague. In the group stage they defeated Austria and France, in the quarterfinals prevailed against Scotland, in the semifinals they beat Germany and were defeated in the final by England. Two players were chosen in the team of the tournament: Tomislav Tonšetić and Renato Babić.
In 2009 Croatia hosted the Euro Cup which took place in the beautiful city of Samobor. Croatian Knights won the bronze medal. The only game that the Knights lost was in the semifinals against Holland. Spain was defeated in the 3rd place match. Again two of our players made the team of the tournament: Tomislav Cvetko and Josip Kravar who also won the MVP of the tournament award. Kaptol Saints changed their name to Agram Power and won the Croatian league.
In the beginning of 2010 the third club was founded, Velika Gorica Bombers. That was the first year when the league was played with 3 clubs. National team played in the first European Championship in Kopenhagen and Malmo, where it ended fifth. In the group stage Croatia won against Germany and lost against Ireland and Sweden. In the 5th place match Croatia defeated Iceland. Once again two of our players were selected into the team of the tournament: Tomislav Cvetko and Josip Kravar. That same year Croatia won the Euro Cup in Milano. On the golden road to victory the Knights defeated Austria, Wales, Ireland and Holland. The final against Holland will be remebered by the last second goal to win the game for Croatia. Josip Josipović was named the finals MVP and 3 of our players were named to the best team of the tournament: Tomislav Cvetko, Josip Kravar and Matija Bašić. This is the first year that the Croatian cup was held. Agram Power won the cup and the best player of the league was Tomislav Cvetko, while Ivan Molnar was selected rookie of the year.
In the beginning of this year Agram Power and Zagreb Hawks decided to merge into one club called Zaprešić Eagles, due to deficit of players. Later that year a new club Zapruđe Giants was founded who joined to play the Croatian cup. Croatian Knights participated in the Euro Cup in Belfast where they won the silver medal. Once more two Croats were selected to the team of the tournament: Tomislav Cvetko and Fran Tonković. With this result the Knights made the longest streak of medals in the history of this competition. Two of our players Luka Čudina and Adam Lončar were invited to represent Europe under 21 team (European Legion) for their match against the AFL Academy. Velika Gorica Bombers won the Croatian league and Zaprešić Eagles won the cup.
Zagreb Hawks return to the Croatian league and Styrian Downunderdogs from Graz, Austria join, so for the first time the league starts with 4 clubs. Zapruđe Giants win the double, the league and the cup. The best player is Filip Lenić and the rookie of the year is Zvonimir Murković, both from Zapruđe Giants. Croatian national team participated in Euro Cup in Edinburgh and finished 5th. After winning against Austria, France and Sweden, Croatia was stopped in the quarterfinals by Denmark. Only Tomislav Cvetko made the team of the tournament. Zvonimir Murković represented Croatia in European legion team (under 21) and Kravar, Cvetko and Tonković represented their country in the European Titans team (best of Europe). In November 2012 European All Star game took place in London, 3 Croats Murković, Kravar and Cvetko played for the ”Continent” team in their defeat against ”Islands” team.
On January 14th 2013 Association of Australian Football-Croatia was founded.
Velika Gorica Bombers were renamed to Velika Gorica Dockers thus becoming brother club to world famous Freemantle Dockers from the AFL. Croatian league continues with 4 clubs: Hawks, Giants, Dockers and Downunderdogs. Ivan Marić, Richmond Tigers ruckman (AFL), became croatian national team ambassador. Ciaran O’Hara, former Ireland national team coach becomes Croatian national team coach. Academic project in coordination with the Sports faculty of Zagreb was started and the team played against the University of Oxford ARFC. Croatian national team played a friendly match with the North London Lions in April.
Croatian national team participated in the European Championship in Dublin and finished 5th. Tomislav Cvetko was the best scorer of the championship and alongside Josip Habljak and Josip Kravar a part of the team of the tournament. In Euro Cup held in Bordeaux Croatian Knights won the bronze medal. Zvonimir Murković was selected into the best team of the tournament. For the first time since they were founded, Zagreb Hawks won the Croatian league and the cup. Josip Habljak was selected rookie of the year, while Tomislav Cvetko won the player of the year award. Another succesfull year is behind us and we are looking forward to new challenges and victories.
This year is special for several reasons. Association of Australian Football-Croatia was given the honor to host the Euro Cup in Umag and the oportunity to catch the gold medal in front of their audience. Also we are proud because of the first female footy club in Croatia Velika Gorica-Mambas, which is also the foundation of our women’s national team, already called out Croatian Queens. Zagreb Hawks have already celebrated the CEAFL title. Also Dockers won the HLAN league winning against Hawks in the last round. Josip Habljak will join his new team Sturt FC from Australia after the Euro Cup. Our Knights won another Euro Cup bronze medal beating Ireland in Umag. Queens finished 4th in their first appearance which is great result.
